Why Do Seniors Adopt Digital Health Tools So Little?
Digital health tools such as apps and connected devices could improve the quality of life for the elderly by allowing them to monitor their health daily. However, their use remains limited, particularly in Singapore, despite significant investments. A recent study sought to understand the reasons for this low adoption by interviewing seniors, caregivers, and managers of senior centers.
The main obstacles identified are the lack of digital skills and confidence, concerns about data security, and the absence of family or community support. Seniors prefer simple and useful tools in their daily lives, while caregivers emphasize the need to customize these technologies. Center managers, for their part, highlight the importance of continuous education and better integration of these tools into local health services.
For these technologies to be adopted, they must be designed in collaboration with seniors, taking into account their specific needs. An intuitive interface, features adapted to physical or cognitive limitations, and clear information on data protection are essential. Trust in these tools is also strengthened when they are supported by recognized institutions, such as hospitals or governments.
The support of loved ones and the community plays a key role. Seniors are more likely to use these technologies when they see their friends or family adopting them. Support programs, such as intergenerational workshops or dedicated helplines, can also facilitate their adoption. Finally, accessible information campaigns and practical training help overcome initial reluctance.
The adoption of these tools therefore depends not only on their technical performance but also on their accessibility, perceived usefulness, and available support. A comprehensive approach, combining technological innovation, education, and collaboration between public and private actors, is necessary to make these solutions truly accessible to the elderly.
